Vehicles on Council land and roads

What you told us

Participants in the stage 1 consultation provided mixed but substantial feedback about vehicles on streets, particularly long-term parking of caravans, boats and trailers; the impacts of construction vehicles, heavy vehicles, congestion, blocked access, and commercial vehicles using residential streets.

During the first phase of community engagement, 66.9% of respondents either supported or strongly supported improved restrictions on the long-term parking of caravans, boats and trailers on Council roads, to improve access and amenity, while other respondents shared concerns about legitimate residential vehicle storage and unfair restrictions.

Our proposed response

The proposed amendments respond by reducing the parking period for caravans, boats and trailers from a total of 28 days to 14 days in a 60-day period for a first offence, and 7 days in a 60-day period for a second or subsequent offence. Days do not need to be continuous. The proposed revision clarifies that a minor movement of the vehicle, to the same or adjoining street, would not reset the period. The drafted new law also introduces provisions for the management of heavy and commercial vehicles relating to impacts around safety, access and congestion issues.

39. Commercial vehicles on Council land or roads

40. Abandoned, derelict and unregistered vehicles
