Council to consider temporary partial road closure of Melrose Street

20 June 2023

Council will consider the outcomes of the statutory engagement process for the proposed trial closure of part of Melrose Street, Sandringham, at its 27 June meeting.

Following broad community engagement on the idea to partially close Melrose Street in late 2022, a statutory engagement process was completed in February - April 2023 to hear stakeholder submissions.

We received 120 written submissions and heard from 23 speakers at a Special Committee of Council meeting on 19 April. Of the 120 written submissions received: 38 supported the trial partial closure, 79 opposed and 3 were unclear in their level of support or opposition. Among those who identified a direct connection with Melrose Street – either as a trader, property owner or resident – the majority (18) opposed the trial partial closure, with three in support.

A petition with 255 signatures was also received objecting to the temporary partial closure, as well as a petition with 131 signatures in support of the six-month trial closure. More information is available in the June meeting agenda (link).

In response to localised opposition to the proposal, Council officers are recommending that Council not proceed with the proposed temporary closure of part of Melrose Street, Sandringham. If Council resolves to proceed, the final design and use of the space will be determined through a targeted community engagement process and further engagement with emergency services.
