Next steps for exploring Sandringham Village ideas

22 December 2022

Council considered community feedback about the idea to pedestrianise a section of Melrose Street, Sandringham at its December 2022 meeting and decided to commence a statutory community engagement process to consider a trial (temporary) closure.

This statutory process, in accordance with Local Government Act 1989 requirements, will include writing to business and property owners of Sandringham Village to formally seek feedback on a temporary road closure of part Melrose Street, Sandringham. If progressed, it is expected that the trial closure would commence in November 2023 for a minimum period of four months. Key stakeholders, including local traders, would also be consulted on the development of a concept design for the use of the space during the trial closure.

Noting community concerns about parking availability in the Village, Council also decided to introduce parking sensors and dynamic signage, as well as update timed parking restrictions, to optimise use of the Council carpark located at 122 Beach Road, Sandringham.

Council will consider a report on the outcomes of the statutory process and engagement on the Melrose Street concept design, and decide whether to progress the trial closure at a future meeting in 2023.
