What you told us about the Victorian Government Moorabbin Activity Centre Program

12 June 2024

Thank you to everyone who participated in our consultation on the Victorian Government’s Moorabbin Activity Centre Program.

The program seeks to review existing planning policy, initially, for 10 activity centres in Melbourne to encourage the development of 60,000 new homes. Moorabbin (Hampton East) Activity Centre is one of these activity centres.

To inform our advocacy and submission to the Victorian Government Moorabbin Activity Centre Program, we undertook consultation during April 2024. We heard from 167 members of our community through an online survey.

Participants told us that

  • A majority of respondents opposed building height increases (78%).
  • Most respondents (75%) opposed the expansion of the existing Activity Centre boundary, raising concerns that would impact liveability and change the character of the area.
  • Participants were concerned there will not be enough adequate community infrastructure to support the growing population.
  • Respondents also raised concerns regarding amenity impacts, increased traffic, inadequate parking, and loss of vegetation.
  • Respondents who supported an increase in building heights (17%) stated that Bayside needs more housing and increased density in areas surrounding public transport and amenities.

What we are doing

Our community engagement program aimed to raise awareness among the Bayside community of the Moorabbin Activity Centre Program.

Community feedback has informed our submission to the Victorian Government and will enable Council to best represent the views of the Bayside community in its advocacy.

Find out more about what the community told us in the community engagement summary report.

Next steps

Bayside’s submission to the Victorian Government Moorabbin Activity Centre Program, and a report on community feedback, will be considered by Council for endorsement at its 18 June Council meeting.

You can read the proposed submission and the community engagement summary report in the meeting agenda.
