About this project

Between 2 March and 29 March 2026, we asked for community feedback on a concept plan to transform Spring Road Park in Hampton East into a secure off‑leash dog area.

This consultation responded to a Councillor Notice of Motion to formalise the park’s use as a dedicated off‑leash space, providing a safe and secure environment for local dogs and their owners.

A summary of the findings is presented below. Click here to download the complete report and results.

What you told us

Overall, the consultation generated strong community support for the concept design, with 42% of respondents indicating they love it and a further 41% saying it is acceptable. Survey responses also showed that most people (82%) would visit Spring Road Park more often if it were converted into a dog off‑leash area, suggesting this would be a more effective use of the space.

Key themes

Many respondents supported creating a secure, fenced dog park to meet growing demand, particularly given high dog ownership across Bayside.

Some community members (around 16% of comments) expressed a preference to retain or upgrade the existing playground rather than convert the park.

A small number of people raised concerns about whether the space would be large enough for dogs to run safely or comfortably.

Suggestions included:

  • Additional drinking taps
  • Separate areas for small dogs
  • Minor layout and functionality improvements

What happens next

With 295 survvey contributions received and consistent feedback indicating strong support for the proposal to create a dedicated off‑leash area the project will now progress to the next stage, including finalising the design and preparing for delivery, subject to Council’s budget process.

Construction is expected to commence later in 2026.
