Trader update 6: 18 October 2019

21 October 2019

Please be respectful to our contractors

Bayside City Council is very disappointed that some community members have verbally confronted our contractors at Beaumaris Concourse and commented unfavourably on their work on social media. Balmain & Co are professional tradespeople, employed to do a job by Council and are entitled to work in an environment safe from harassment.

The decision to use asphalt in the design was a Council decision that was made after extensive community consultation. This decision was again revisited through a Notice of Motion in June 2019. Details of the history of this decision and why asphalt is used in the main footpath areas instead of decorative concrete paving can be found on our website www.bayside.vic.gov.au/haveyoursay

The contractors, Balmain & Co, were chosen through a competitive tender process and have been doing an outstanding job. Despite a curve ball thrown by Telstra, with unexpected NBN works taking place soon after the contract began, Balmain & Co have managed to work quickly and efficiently to catch up and be on track to complete the majority of works before the busy Christmas period.

Council has been very pleased with the quality of their work. All construction projects experience minor defects and these are traditionally addressed at the end of the contract. We have full confidence that Balmain & Co will complete the works to a high, professional standard.

If you are dissatisfied with any aspect of the works or the decision to use asphalt in the concourse streetscape design, please direct your enquiries to Council.
