Community feedback results informs decision

27 June 2024

Between 28 February and 26 March 2024, we heard from 310 community members via online surveys, written submissions, online Q&A portal, social media, and resident meeting, about their views on the proposed no stopping restrictions on Balcombe Road.

Of the 310 consultation respondents, 139 entries (45%) accounted for residents who identified as residing within the wider Beaumaris area. Of 139 entries received, 74 respondents (53%) supported the proposals, 64 opposed (46%) the proposals whilst the remainder (1%) were unsure or neutral on the proposal.

When results are analysed by geographical areas, there was stronger opposition to the proposals from homeowners on Balcombe Road (61%), with concerns about loss of parking spaces and congestion on neighbouring streets. But within this geographical catchment, 34% of respondents also supported the proposals to increase cyclist safety.

Analysis of the overall results show a clear division of views with support from the community (54%) whose key concerns centre on safety and younger cyclists using Balcombe Road to access local schools. The remaining section of the community (44%) opposed the proposals with significant concerns focused on parking impacts, loss of parking spaces outside homes on Balcombe Road and increasing parking use on neighbouring side streets.

What we’re doing:

Feedback from the community consultation has resulted in the decision not to implement the no stopping restrictions at this time. Although a small majority of consultation respondents supported the proposal, most objectors were households on adjacent side streets and Balcombe Road. Common concerns raised included the parking availability for vehicles required to move during the proposed 1-hour restriction windows, further increasing traffic volume during the identified busy commuter times, and the impact of increased congestion on side streets (with unmarked cycle paths). Council will continue to seek improvements for cycle safety across Bayside through objectives linked to:
