Have Your Say – Brighton Grammar School proposal at Wilson Recreation Reserve

29 June 2021

At the 16 February 2021 Ordinary Meeting of Council, a report was heard detailing a revised proposal from Brighton Grammar School (BGS) to renew the sportsground at Wilson Recreation Reserve. The revised proposal responded to discussions between Council, neighbours, community groups and BGS to find a resolution to the issues raised about a previously proposed pavilion development.

Under this proposal, BGS would upgrade the sportsground with irrigation and turf, and maintain this reconstructed sportsground to Council’s highest standard, install a 900mm black powder coated chain link fence along Outer Crescent and seek a nine year licence that reflects the School’s current use of the Reserve. The proposal does not include the construction of a sports pavilion at the site.

The Reserve will remain accessible for passive or active community use when not allocated for community or school sports activities. The sportsground will continue to be allocated by Council for summer use by local Bayside cricket clubs, including Brighton Cricket Club. It should be noted that activities within Bayside’s municipal reserves are regulated under Division 2 of the Neighbourhood Amenity Local Law. This means that access to the playing area of a municipal reserve during a sports match or gathering is restricted to players, competitors and officials while training or competition is in progress.

At this meeting it was resolved:

That Council:

  1. Confirms that Wilson Reserve remains Council owned, public open space and that Council’s priorities for the Reserve are community use and easy access for residents
  2. Defers a decision on the Brighton Grammar School proposal, to allow community consultation and stakeholder engagement with local residents and key stakeholders, with particular consideration given to Brighton Cricket Club, and Bayley House
  3. Further considers a report no later that June 21 (extension provided) on the results of consultation and includes in the report an assessment of the proposal against Council’s Open Space Strategy 2021 and any impacts the proposal will have on availability of open space and community use within the Middle Brighton area.
