In February – March 2022, we asked our community where they would like more bicycle parking infrastructure in Bayside’s shopping precincts.
More than 100 people took part in this consultation. Their feedback is now being used to help inform our ongoing delivery of bicycle parking infrastructure.
What you told us
Most reported they often (37%) or sometimes (34%) ride to their local shopping precinct (71%).
Common reasons not to ride to local shops: lack of safe/sheltered bike parking (35%), traffic makes it dangerous (23%); lack of dedicated/safe paths (13%).
If more bicycle parking was provided, most (62%) respondents agreed it would encourage them to ride to shopping precincts more often.
Locations for more bike parking
Locations – Hampton (31), Brighton (21), Sandringham (18), Beaumaris (16), and Black Rock (14).
Destinations – shopping precincts including general retail (34), cafes and restaurants (20), near grocery shopping (14), and the foreshore (11)
What we're doing
Space for more bikes
Where there is adequate space for footpath users (1.5m to 2m), we’re considering installing angled bicycle parking street furniture which can accommodate more than two bikes. Pictured on this page is an example in Sandringham Village.Bicycle parking infrastructure delivered
In response to community feedback, new bike parking infrastructure has been recently installed in 13 sites predominantly in Sandringham, Beaumaris, Black Rock and Hampton. This means there are approximately 50 new bicycle parking spaces in our activity centres.More bicycle parking
We heard that there are many sites you’d like us to consider for bike parking. We’ll continue to prioritise delivering more bicycle parking within Bayside through the ongoing capital works programs.
