Thank you for sharing your ideas on the types of community services and groups that could utilise Council’s existing building at Hurlingham Park.

Previously known as the Brighton Angler’s Club, the existing building at Hurlingham Park was also temporarily used by the Hurlingham Preschool and Brighton Playroom.

Community feedback received from this engagement will be used to assist Council in bringing a fresh purpose to the space, and to help create positive and connecting experiences for the local community.

What you told us

  • Vision

To have an inclusive, shared space for the community to come together and connect through a range of activities and programs. Participants who contributed their ideas wanted the space to be used for all ages to enhance wellbeing and reduce isolation.

How we collected feedback

Project opportunities

Nearly all participants were supportive of the concept to repurpose the Hurlingham Park building to benefit Brighton East residents. They believed that this facility could fill a gap in the area for a multipurpose community space for creative and cultural activities such as arts spaces, learning and wellbeing programs.

A place for...

  • Creative and performing artists

  • Local community events

  • Families with young children

  • Newly retired people in the area to connect

  • Older residents to improve wellbeing

  • Studying or learning

Popular ideas based on activities

Participants expressed a desire for an accessible and inclusive space that brings together people in the community to improve their health and wellbeing, enjoy and connect. The following table summarises the most popular activities that were suggested:

  • Events/hire space and activities

Participants expressed the need for a space to be used for community groups to hire and offer programs and classes that were affordable (or free) for residents.

  • Access for all ages and abilities

Participants expressed a desire for an accessible and inclusive space that brings together people in the community, especially isolated and vulnerable community members. Accessibility was emphasised as an important aspect for visitors to ease access to the building for young families, older residents or people with a disability.

Next steps

Using community feedback, we will further explore options for the site. Over the next few months, the Brighton Arts Society will be using the space while their ongoing space is being renovated.
