Dendy Park LED lighting upgrade – project update

Between 6 and 19 December 2024, we heard from 156 unique contributors who submitted 163 comments via online submissions and direct emails to Council Officers about their views on the Dendy Park LED lighting upgrade.

Support for the lighting upgrade:

All contributors (156, 100%) were in support of the lighting upgrade at Dendy Park. One contributor noted their support for the project only if Council is successful in the grant application to help fund the project.

Benefits identified for the upgrade included:

  • Improve visibility/playability/accessibility – 33 responses
  • Improve safety - 38 responses
  • Improve conditions for the club and/or the general community - 26 responses
  • Increased/support junior participation - 37 responses
  • Improved energy efficiency (sustainable) - 42 responses
  • Provide cost savings and low maintenance costs - 22 responses
  • Increased female participation – 3 responses
  • Improve training and/or new night matches - 19 responses
  • Overall health benefits and mental wellbeing 2 responses

Challenges associated with the upgrade included:

  • Provide improved or upgraded facilities as well - 3 responses
    • improved sportsground
    • artificial turf ground
    • car park lighting
  • Managing expectations with dog users (request to include the lights on in the morning and evening for dog walkers) – 3 responses
  • Only supported if the grant is successful – 1 response

The project has received strong backing from both tenant clubs at the reserve and football Victoria. Each club has submitted letters of support for the funding application, highlighting the themes listed below. Notably, there were no negative or challenging themes mentioned. The clubs and associations that provided letters of support include:

  • Brighton Soccer Club
  • Hampton East Brighton Football Club
  • Brighton Old Boys Football Club
  • Brighton District Cricket Club
  • Football Victoria

Next steps

Council officers will prepare and submit a grant application for an SRV Local Sports Infrastructure Fund Community Sports Lighting grant. Providing a successful grant application outcome, and subject to Council’s budget review process, we’ll upgrade the lighting at Dendy Park during the 2025/ 2026 financial year.
