BRIGHTON - Brighton Beach (Were Street) Centre

How do you use this centre? How often do you go there? What do you like about this centre? It is proposed to define this centre as a Small Neighbourhood Activity Centre to acknowledge and protect its role in providing daily conveniences and local services. Height limits in this centre will stay the same, at 2 storeys. This centre is currently zoned Commercial 1 Zone which allows retail, office, business, entertainment, community and residential use. There is no change proposed to the zoning of this centre. New development on the main street of the centre may not be supported if it does not provide views into its ground floor. I use this shopping centre daily, as do other members of our household. The speed limit through this precinct is 40km per hour yet cars consistantly ignore this and travel at speeds up to and well over 60km. The signage for the reduced speed limit is very poor and the result endangers pedestrians and shoppers. I strongly support the heigh limits staying the same. EMM

I support 2 storeys with facades of character (not like Bay St - cheap & sterile), some of the shops have no activity or badly need an upgrade, the 2 cafes have been a big improvement, although I hear residents are complaining about parking pressures, cars do speed down Were St, especially at night, but speed humps are a pain, maybe some more planting, quirky seating, coloured/ textured footpath to lift the ambience and tie in with the beach atmosphere. The current zoning should remain. It will only ever be a small service area. meb
