HIGHETT - Highett and Spring Road

How do you use this centre? How often do you go there? What do you like about this centre? It is proposed to define this centre as a Small Neighbourhood Activity Centre to acknowledge and protect its role in providing daily conveniences and local services. Height limits in this centre will stay the same, at 2 storeys. This centre is currently zoned Commercial 1 Zone which allows retail, office, business, entertainment, community and residential use. There is no change proposed to the zoning of this centre. New development on the main street of the centre may not be supported if it does not provide views into its ground floor. I dislike the new Woolworths Shopping Centre (if this is the definition of Active Street Frontage), due to the lack of room for safe pedestrian activity at the front of the shopping complex. The centre is very imposing from the streetfront and due its lack of set back from the street. If redevelopment opportunities arise, such as this development, developments should be set back to allow enough room for safe pedestrian activity. I do not feel safe to walk my children along here as traffic is much too close to the footpath and no barriers in place to protect the footpath from bad drivers.
